Key Responsibilities
- ✓ Partnering with an assigned TSA-certified explosives detection canine to screen passengers and baggage at Local Area
- ✓ Conducting daily canine health assessments, training exercises, and maintenance of the canine's operational readiness
- ✓ Screening checked baggage, cargo areas, and airport facilities on a rotational basis across the Local Area terminal
- ✓ Responding to canine final responses (alerts) by notifying supervisory TSOs and coordinating follow-up screening
- ✓ Maintaining detailed daily logs of canine deployments, training sessions, and alert incidents
- ✓ Transporting the assigned canine safely to and from the kennel facility serving the Local Area airport area
- ✓ Participating in mandatory recertification, proficiency exercises, and inter-agency canine training programs
- ✓ Caring for the canine's physical needs including feeding, grooming, veterinary appointments, and off-duty care
- ✓ Coordinating with TSA canine supervisors and the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program (NEDCTP)
Requirements & Qualifications
- • U.S. citizenship
- • High school diploma or GED
- • Minimum one year as a certified TSO (canine handler positions are internal selections)
- • Completion of the 10-week TSA Explosives Detection Canine Handler Course at Lackland AFB, TX
- • Ability to care for an assigned canine in your personal residence (residential acceptance required)
- • Pass enhanced background investigation and medical evaluation
- • Valid driver's license and ability to transport canine in a government vehicle
Preferred Skills
- • Prior experience with working dogs, dog training, or law enforcement K9 programs
- • Veterinary first aid or animal care certification
