Overview

Behavior Detection Officer

The security checkpoint at the Local Area airport facility plays a critical role in maintaining safety standards for local and regional departures. Aviation security in this region depends on the professionalism of every Behavior Detection Officer stationed at the screening lanes. This DHS position requires sharp attention to detail, physical readiness, and a genuine commitment to protecting the traveling public. In this Behavior Detection Officer capacity, you will rotate through multiple screening positions — from X-ray and AIT to document checking and checked baggage inspection — maintaining sharp performance standards at every station. Officers serving as Behavior Detection Officer are eligible for federal retirement under FERS, TSP matching contributions, and union representation through AFGE. This is a career-track position with meaningful benefits from day one.

Not every threat is visible to an X-ray machine. At Local Area, US 00000, Behavior Detection Officers (BDOs) serve as TSA's eyes across the airport environment — identifying behavioral patterns, anomalous stress indicators, and suspicious cues that may signal a security threat before it ever reaches the checkpoint. This is one of the most specialized and intellectually demanding roles in the TSA officer corps. BDOs at Local Area are trained in the Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT) methodology, a scientifically validated behavior analysis framework developed through federal research. Officers engage with passengers in casual, non-confrontational conversation, ask behavioral indicator-driven questions, and refer individuals who trigger defined thresholds to additional screening — all while blending into the normal airport environment in US.
